The Range Program at the University of Idaho

The Rangeland Ecology and Management major is rated 8th best in the U.S. for range science and management degrees by universities.com. The program prepares students for careers with government agencies, conservation groups and private landowners.

The range program offers four career tracks including:

-       Land and Livestock

-       Restoration Ecology

-       Wildland Fire

-       Wildlife Habitat

The range program offers a multitude of hands-on learning exercises, outdoor classrooms, and interactive laboratories such as:

-       REM 151: Rangeland Principles

-       REM 252: Wildland Plant Identification

-       REM 341: Systematic Botany

-       REM 410: Principles of Vegetation Monitoring and Measurement

These of course are just a few of the many remarkable classes that are offered through the range program here at the University of Idaho. Our range program prepares students for careers with government agencies (e.g. Bureau of Land Management, Forest Service, etc.), conservation groups (e.g. Idaho Soil and Water Conservation District), and private landowners.

Opportunities are endless through the range program. Students have study opportunities that occur all over the state of Idaho such as:

-       Studying at the McCall Field campus where students learn by immersing themselves in the Idaho Rockies.

-       Attend trips to Rock Creek Ranch which is more than 10,000 acres of Idaho rangelands used for research, education and outreach.

-       The IFIRE Lab, one of the only fire Combustion labs located on a university campus in the United States.

Students are also present with the chance to join the Range Club where students can meet others with like minds. The Range Club stays active within the College of Natural Resources and the University of Idaho. They put on pancake feeds open to everyone to help raise funds for trip to the annual Society of Rangeland Management meets and the Taylor Ranch trip where the club members fly into the Frank Church- River of No Return Wilderness.

The range program is full of opportunities and unique experiences. For more information about the range program at the University of Idaho visit https://www.uidaho.edu/cnr/undergraduate-majors/bs-rangeland-conservation.
